Gandhi Ashram

A journey to Gandhi's Ashram in Bhithiharwa, West Chamaran district, State of Bihar, India

The place preserves the story of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and his compatriots who fought the British for the oppression of poor farmers and exploitation of labourers in Champaran. The farmers were forced to grow Indigofera Tinctoria, also called Indigo, under harsh conditions, long hours, and without adequate wages for basic needs. The Champaran Satyagraha (satyagraha -the pursuit of truth) of 1917 was a landmark rebellion led by Mahatma Gandhi in the Indian independence movement. Gandhi used the same methods he had used in South Africa to organise mass uprisings by people to protest against injustice. Gandhi visited and gave his historical statement in the court in Champaran that he came here to render humanitarian and national service. I shall make Champaran my home and work for the suffering people. The Champaran Satyagraha gave direction to India's youth and freedom struggle.

Bhithiharwa ashram is a place of peace and tranquillity. One can feel the presence of a great soul watching and guiding all who strive for social justice and welfare.

During my travel to Champaran, I learned of a movement led by a renowned political strategist, a public health expert Mr. Prashant Kishore who is leading a social movement for change called Jan Suraaj in Bihar, India. The movement inspired by Gandhian ideals started in the historical Champaran district on 2nd October 2022.

I took the opportunity to meet him and learn more about his vision and plans.

Dialog on Nonviolence

The Gandhi Forum Malawi participates in the Community of the African Non-Violent Communication Forum (ANVCF). On 30th January 2023, ANVAF, in collaboration with like-minded institutions and individuals, organized a webinar titled "Dialogue on Non-Violence".

The webinar's objective was to remind the new generation of the importance and relevance of philosophers and leaders like Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and Nelson Mandela in current times, which are ridden with extremism, hatred and intolerance. The webinar was a call to the youth to appreciate and adopt the non-violent approach to bringing social justice and the welfare of all in society.

Victor Chipofya, Jr, a member of the Gandhi Forum, joined the ANVCF team in putting together the webinar commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Martyrdom of Mahatma Gandhi. Participants from Sudan, India, Malawi, Zambia and Cameroon were present in the discussion.
